hello

i am in consideration for a contract assignment in hong kong but have never been there.
I need some advice on the following:

-what do i get for 24'000 Hong Kong dollars if I wanted to rent a place?
-can I put some money aside with 55'000 HK dollars per month?
-how much for a coffee in downtown?
-is driving (renting) a car a goood way of getting around?
-whats a good place to live?
-what too look out for, avoid?
-how safe is it?

any insight welcome.

hkharbour, sounds like you get a position with Dragonair...

To answer some of your questions:
24k HKD will give you a decent 3 bedroom apartment similar in s size and style to a western equivalent.
55k HKD is not a bad paycheck even in HK. If you are not every single night out, you will be able to put money aside. No problem.
Coffee prices vary in downtown. Really depends on quality and location/chain. Expect similar prices than in any other major city. (London/Paris/New York...)
Self-driving is not recommended. The public transport system is faster and lot more efficient.
Many expats live in Discovery Bay on Lantau Island. If you prefer a more 'integrated life', you may opt for a smaller village on one of the islands or the city life. I believe there is also a good document on this website explaining the lifestlye in HKG.

What to look out for? Nothing really. Just use common sense. HKG is a pretty safe place. You might wanna avoid certain places at times. Just get in touch with a local or an expat living there. Sure they will help.
