I would like to know what made you join your pilots union...
-because a union protects you when the going gets tough?
-because its the voice of the pilots and you have a say?
-because you hope for a a better contract?
-because your friends have joined?
-because you think there must be a counterforce to management?
-because you get a free sticker when joining?
-because you just want to be member of a club?
-because of legal protection?
-because you don't know?

I've been a union member for many years. Some times were happy times others were not.
I am considering to change my employer and with it the union. Or should I stay with it (BALPA)?

Looking forward to your replies.

Most points you listed actually, apart from maybe the first and last. Having said that, don't put too much hope into a union, they are only as good as its members.

I see it this way: Companies sometimes want to make most out of its flight crews leading to unacceptable working conditions. The union steps in and asks for goodies and conditions the management can and will not accept (everbody wants to keep its face kind of thing). Then after a long strenuous fight with pressure for everybody involved you come to an agreement. So the money you pay to the union or the support you give them, will get you a contract you can accept. The outcome can of course vary depending on the strength of a union. Also the state of the aviation economy is of importance...

...for me because I get legal assistance. The rest doesn't really interest me much. Most unions are more of a club than what anything else. But that might be wrong in other parts of the world.

So long.
