I'm not a pilot but hope that doesn't get me kicked off the board....
The reason I've signed up with this site is because I find it quite useful and I am considering an career as a pilot/airline pilot. I've been reading through the material available for download on this site but I like to hear some advice from you guys out there who do this job every day.

What should I consider before I make a decision, what are the steps?

If I have the option, should I join the military?

Are there schools I should look into?

Whats the first step to take?

If not choosing the pilot career path, I probably would consider ATC...
I am now 21.

Any advice will be a help to make the right decision. I hope I am not being bothersome.

Hey mcfly1, hi dee hoh! Sorry for late reply, but was really busy setting up new features on the site. Was sort of hoping someone else would jump in.

To answer your questions:
.military?
If you feel like joining the men in green uniforms, then you certainly should consider such a move. The only disadvantage I can see is, that once you move over to civil aviation you are not 20 anymore. Doesn't mean you cannot have a nice career after the service. Maybe someone who has done it can share his/her experiences?

.schools to look into?
I assume you are from the UK. There are a few big training schools. Cabair and Oxford just to name two. I haven't been to any of them, but maybe someone else reading this can give some feedback?

.first step to take..
OK you have decided to become a pilot. Make sure you can get a class 1 medical. Do you have enough funding to complete the training? You will also need to decide whether you want to join a modular or integrated course.

.ATC
Just a word of caution here. These are two very different jobs. I agree they have few common denominators, but responsibilities are different. To get a better picture of what the job as a controller involves try to visit one of their control centers.

If you have more questions about the job as pilot, please go ahead. Thats what this forum is for! icon_thumbup1.gif

Integrated means that you complete all training in one go. From zero flight time to the frozen ATPL licence. Depending on school that will take you about 12-24 months. Integrated courses are mainly aimed a airline wannabees. Many airlines also prefer applicants with completed integrated training courses.

Modular gives you more freedom as you can choose when to take the various courses until you obtain your frozen ATPL. Modular courses can also be slightly cheaper. In terms of quality, they are nowadays both the same as everything is JAR regulated. If you want top take a break in between training and get some experience (instructing), this is the way to go.
