According to AIRBUS the successor of the A320 will bring new technologies in powerplants, materials, aerodynamics and flightdecks (Source: Ian Dawkins, who is senior vice-president strategy and future programmes) Service-entry date is envisaged in at least 15 years from now. Powered by advanced turbofans or open rotors, these aircraft would offer 30-40% lower fuel burn than today's single-aisles, he says, with the gains being delivered around 50/50 between the engine and the airframe. Because of the idea to use open-rotors, the press sees the new A320 as an aircraft with propellers... In another article I read that AIRBUS is thinking to let aircraft fly in a formation to save fuel due to lower drag. This however, seems to me a rather revolutionary idea considering wakes and the like. So perhaps it's a good idea to keep current in your turboprop aircraft. It might pay off one day when applying for an A320 job! flightwork.com - International Pilot Network |
