ESA, the European Space Agency is working on a new GNSS, the Galileo system. It will enter service at around 2014 and will have a much higher precision than the US version, the GPS. It is a non-military system and it's operation independent from any military actions. It shall also be used for applications in aviation. Sounds all good to me..so does this mean we will soon fly Galileo Approaches and no longer GPS approaches? flightwork.com - International Pilot Network |

no, I believe that it will all come through the same interface, but instead of requiring land based navigation aids as a back up, the US GPS will back up Galileo and vis versa. which would be awesome, because then a lot more runways would be available in IFR conditions. |
