Executive Jet Management has received Federal Aviation Administration approval to use an Apple iPad App from Jeppesen as an alternative to paper aeronautical maps, in a precedent-setting move that will set the stage for this Class I portable, kneeboard electronic flight bag to be rolled out by other operators.

The first publicly disclosed customer of Jeppesen's so-called Mobile TC (terminal charts) iPad App, Executive Jet is now using the solution as the sole reference for electronic charts - including during taxi, take-off and landing - on "10 different aircraft types" in the fleet, reveals Jeff Buhl, Jeppesen Mobile TC App project manager and senior manager, Jeppesen Enterprise Solutions.

This is definitely a big move for the industry and the days of the good old paper charts are numbered now. Its no secret that many pilots have used the iPad before, but now that it is approved as well for commercial operations, many more operators will consider switching to a low cost solution like the iPad. I bet producers of traditional EFBs will not like it too much as their pricey products will be more difficult to sell.
All is needed now is a good iPad holder, which keeps the tablet also in position in turbulent weather. But I guess that already exist as I write these lines...

Tablets in cockpit, good or bad?

Thanks for the info, I will try to remember when it happens icon_smile.gif

I do not own an iPad yet, but people who do have one seem to be very happy about it. It definitely can lighten your case when going to work as you do not have to carry all those documents anymore with you. As I often instruct in Flight Simulators and carry manuals, Jepp Charts etc. with me, it would be worth to at least think about getting one.
But maybe my employer sponsors me one soon? Or why not fit one into the simulator so the pilots can use it?
