This is how Louis Smith, president of FltOps.com, sees where airline pilot hiring is heading the next few years: Has a pilot hiring boom finally begun? L.Smith: It is just beginning and will be the longest and largest pilot hiring spree in the history of the industry. Which sectors will show the most promise for professional pilots? L.Smith: Among the primary career sectors (major airlines, corporate/fractionals, foreign/expats), the majors will return to the preferred positions for many pilots. The last ten years have been the worst I have ever seen, but the next ten years will be the best. What’s causing this to happen? L.Smith: The four factors that created the depressed job market are now disappearing. The mandatory retirement age to 65, elimination of the third pilot, oil prices at $147 per barrel, and a severely depressed economy will soon be a distant and bad memory. Full interview here Pretty optimistic if you ask me. I do agree that things are picking up and we might see some good years ahead of us in the job market, but risks remain high. The four factors he talks about are indeed disappearing but I would not put my hand into any fire regarding a stable oil price. Sorry but that's just wishful thinking. Yes, the economy is recovering but little is needed to create chaos again. In my opinion stability for ten years is something of the past. We have to get used to a rougher ride. Do you see it more positive than I do? Should we believe Mr Smith? flightwork.com - International Pilot Network |

I think there is truth to it. Things are picking up and hiring is taking place a little bit everywhere. However only very few pilots are getting hired, and we are still a long way from the "best years". I'm not even sure the "best years" are coming. Let's not forget that Louis Smith's goal here is to make money by having pilots and airlines sign up for career fairs and other services at flightops. Therefore it is in his interest to be positive about the industry's future. |

Good analysis, I think you're right. Airlines have no choice but must remain very flexible to react to up and downs of the industry which creates instability in the job market too. PLUS the terms & conditions used to be much better centuries ago. So it's fair to say, we are far away from the best years. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining and I have never experienced 'the best years', but just doing a 'reality-check' Fly safe. Stefan flightwork.com - International Pilot Network |

And here's another interesting effect: CTC reports 'record' revival in demand for pilot training "CTC chairman Chris Clarke says he has seen this recruitment recovery phenomenon before, following periods in which airlines froze recruiting for as long as they could, and he says this resurgence of demand has already led to a record number of placements for CTC graduates this year." Probably, things look ok compared to last year. Still, there are enough industry members who say they have heard of the infamous looming pilot shortage continuously for the last 20 years - and are still waiting to see it. |

If that predicted pilot shortage does occur, solutions would be found: The single pilot large cabin passenger jet! flightwork.com - International Pilot Network |
