Below is a NOTAM issued for SENDAI Airport near the Fukushima nuclear powerplant: B1080/11 - IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ARTICLE 80 OF CIVIL AERONAUTICS LAW, FLT PROHIBITED AREA IS ESTABLISHED AS FLW, IDENTIFICATION : RJP1 AREA : WI A RADIUS OF 30KM FM 372529N1410158E (THE TOKYO ELECTRIC POWER CO.INC. FUKUSHIMA NO.1, OKUMA-FUTABA-CHO FUTABA-GUN IN FUKUSHIMA) RMK/SEE AIP ENR 5.3-29. SFC - UNL, 15 MAR 02:59 2011 UNTIL PERM. CREATED: 15 MAR 03:03 2011 Anyone recalls what was done in 1986 during the Chernobyl disaster regarding flight restrictions? It seems that most of the strong radiation is limited to lower levels for the moment, but increased values are measurable as far as the US, see picture below: ![]() Image provided and © by ZAMG http://www.zamg.ac.at/aktuell/index.php (National Met Organisation / Austria) Apparently radiation experienced on a flight is far higher than spending a day on Tokio. Unfortunately I do not have figures to prove that. And, is it the same kind of radiation? flightwork.com - International Pilot Network |
