Hello all

I am a brand new member and am currently looking for the best flight school to train with in South Africa. I know that this forum is mainly for serious pilots but I was hoping that you may be able to offer an informed outsider's opinion.

I have been told that 43 Air School is one of the top 3 flight schools in the world. Is that really true?
I have also been told that Aptrac Aviation trains many international pilots. Apparently South Africa has great weather for flying.

It is a difficult choice and Aptrac is quite a lot cheaper than 43.

Does any one know anything about these two schools?

Hideho and welcome to the forums,

From what I can gather on the web, both schools are classic flight schools with uniforms etc...

It's true that Aptrac is cheaper. Would you consider FAPE an advantage?
Another choice would be Progress flight academy or Algoa Flying Club.

43 is apparently really good with very well structured courses, good flight instructors etc..., I guess in the end it's often to the point that you will get what you pay for...

Thanks fliteadmin

My son is the one who will be training and he has done al the research. His plan is to do his PPL (he is paying 50% himself) and then get a cadet-ship in order to earn his way towards a commercial licence. As far as we could see Aptrac and 43 are have the best cadet programs.

He has had so much advice from pilots but often people say that a PPL is the same no matter where you get it. He can not fund his commercial license so we are looking at the best way to get there.

It is a difficult choice but for now it seems Aptrac is the one.

That advice is to some extent true if you pursue a professional career in aviation. In case you have done your PPL in a not-so-good school, there is still time to improve skills and knowledge during the next steps of training (CPL, IR, ATPL). Having trained for the PPL in a good school has various advantages though:

- The PPL is often the first contact of a trainee with flying. Laying a proper base will help in the future.
It's easier to learn something properly in the first place than to correct things in a second attempt.

- It's safer! Many PPL guys are collecting experience flying solo after obtaining a PPL. Good training can be a safety factor during this important phase in a flying career. Many accidents happen during the time a pilot is gaining experience after obtaining his/her PPL (approx. total hours 50-300).

A sponsorship program or cadet program is definitely the best way to get into commercial aviation these days. It helps to reduce the costs and a job offer is likely if the airline is hiring and the training goes well.

Good luck with your decision!
