Pilot assessment methods

Hello everyone,
For a long time I have been paying attention to different kind of pilot assessment methods. Most of them are created to assess ab-initios or already flying pilots' aptitudes for flying, their psychological abilities to work as a pilot (considering all the responsibility they accept with this profession)or even a crew captain.
What I end up with was two different pilot assessment methods COMPASS and PILAPT. These two methods were at the top of the list of those that are used mostly in the industry of aviation.
Nonetheless, I think there are many more pilot assessment methods worldwide. So my aim to ask you to share your knowledge with all of us about any kind of pilot assessment methods that you know.

Hi TadasT,

Interesting subject. I know COMPASS and PILAPT, but only from it's name. I was always under the impression that companies do pretty much what they please in this regard. Is COMPASS/PILAPT a complete pilot assessment package for companies including interview, theoretical knowledge & psychological testing and sim profiles/exercises etc. or is it just focusing on aptitude/psychological/theoretical testing?

May I ask why you are interested in assessment methods? Are you a recruiter or pilot applicant?

Hello fliteadmin,

Thanks for your replay. Personally I am a student studying for a PPL at the moment, but I am for sure interested in getting my ATPL in the near future.

Because of expansion of aviation market worldwide and bigger competition between potential pilots for airline (phenomenon that is happening at the moment) will require some assessment methods, to evaluate and choose best pilots.

In my case, in the future I may be assessed by such methods so I think it is wise to know more about them. I heard that some airlines have COMPASS and PILAPT already working for them to assess new ab-initio pilots.

Answering your question, I found some information about specific of COMPASS and PILAPT. For example, COMPASS is a computer based test to assess pilots' aptitudes for flying abilities by doing some task on simulators. Also you can assess psychological abilities of applicant. In comparison, PILAPT is based on assessing applicants psychomotor abilities for flying only, but it does not indicate your psychological characteristics.

Considering this information I think these methods focuses on aptitude/psychological/theoretical testings without any interviews, knowledge testing and so on.

I have sat and passed COMPASS tests in 2011 - but as a military flight instructor i have to say I was unimpressed - the capacity and situational awareness tests are very basic and behave nothing like a real aircraft.

It would be better if the airlines and schools came up with a grading test for PPLs - up to first solo in a real aircraft.

I see what you mean ekranoplan. Well, I think the biggest issue about using real aircraft is the financial side. It would be far more too expensive (especialy for schools) to evaluate every single student.
On the other hand, schools could use real flight test after the major parts of assessment period - after technical knowledge evaluation, psychological evaluation, English knowledge evaluation and so on...
But don't you think that standards for military pilots and civil pilot are quite different?
